FAQ

Please review the following frequently asked questions before entering a submission.

Who is putting this book together?

This book is assembled and edited by Lynne Butler, a wills and estates lawyer, and Chelsea Kennedy, the practice coordinator of a law firm.

Do the stories have to be true?

Yes. Any story you submit must be true to the best of your knowledge.

Can they take place anywhere?

We are primarily interested in Canadian stories, however, we will consider an exceptional tale from outside the country.

Do I have to reveal the name of the deceased?

No. It would be best for it to be impossible for any reader to identify the deceased. You may wish to give the deceased a fake name.

Will I be paid for my story?

No. If your story is chosen, we will provide you with a code to receive a copy of the book at cost.

Is the editor going to verify the facts of my story?

No.

Will my story appear exactly the way I submit it?

Your story may be edited for spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting, etc. prior to publication. The facts will remain the same. If your story contains profanity, those words will be edited.

Is my story definitely going to be used?

No. We are not able to accept all submissions.

What is the deadline for submitting a story?

All submissions must be in no later than May 31, 2019.

What happens if my story is accepted?

We will contact you by email within 3 weeks of your submission to let you know we have chosen your story. At this time we will send you a consent form to sign that states you are allowing us to use your story, that you are aware there is no financial compensation, and giving us permission to edit the story. If we do not receive the signed consent from you, your story cannot be used.

What happens if my story is rejected?

Only those authors who are accepted will be contacted.

Why do I have to give you my personal information if it won't be published?

We want to ensure all authors are real people. In order to obtain consent from the author of each accepted story, we must be able to contact you.

We're looking for your stories!

Do you have a weird, odd, funny, or strange story about a will or an estate? If so, submit your tale to be included in an upcoming book about odd estates. We're looking for stories about strange estates - the ones that have something so unique about them, you wouldn't think it would actually happen. The twist is, each of these stories is true. If you would like to submit a story, review the guidelines and FAQs. All stories must be submitted by May 31, 2019.
